Clapper Gets His Day in the Senate
CommentAfter weeks of delay, the Senate intelligence committee will formally interrogate President Obama’s nominee to be Director of National Intelligence, Gen. James Clapper (ret).
The committee has notified the White House that it expects Clapper to be ready as early as next Tuesday. That’s cheerful news for the White House, which had been pushing SSCI chair Dianne Feinstein to hold the hearings before the August recess.
Feinstein had balked at doing so before the House moved to send a new intelligence authorization bill to conference, but she has settled instead for increased White House pressure on Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi still hasn’t moved on the bill; she wants the General Accountability Office to play a much larger role in intelligence oversight, which the White House finds unacceptable.
