We can no longer stay in denial that some things are very wrong. Today’s post gathers news from other nations, newest items at the top, with thanks to my regular contributors, (*betmo and #Jon).
All around the world — about the Military’s Mission Creep*, with an “Interactive map that blows my mind*”; says betmo. This is from Global Research and Mother Jones (9/5/08): “Being in Base Denial.*” To quote:
Check out the package of pieces at MJ by clicking here. Perhaps most significant, the magazine has produced an impressive online interactive map of U.S. bases worldwide. Check it out by clicking here.
. . . Here it is, as simply as I can put it: In the course of any year, there must be relatively few countries on this planet on which U.S. soldiers do not set foot, whether with guns blazing, humanitarian aid in hand, or just for a friendly visit.
. . . At the height of the Roman Empire, the Romans had an estimated 37 major military bases scattered around their dominions. At the height of the British Empire, the British had 36 of them planetwide. Depending on just who you listen to and how you count, we have hundreds of bases. According to Pentagon records, in fact, there are 761 active military “sites” abroad.

From the United Kingdom — a story at BBCNews (8/30/08): “Jails ‘hold 8,500 ex-servicemen.*‘” Betmo asks, “wonder what the stats are here?” To quote from the story:
Up to 8,500 former members of the armed forces are serving sentences in UK prisons, it has been claimed.
. . . Mr Llwyd said thousands of former members of the armed services who served either in the Gulf or Afghanistan had been subsequently convicted of offences and jailed.
He claimed that “effectively when armed personnel return, there is no help for them,” and said the position in the UK “contrasts greatly with the way the United States provide counselling and assistance to their armed personnel”.
“Global Climate Wars Ahead*” about a post in Survival Acres (8/27/08). To quote:
. . . the data is readily out there, available for anyone to read and pay attention to. A definite, “I told you so” moment.
Refugees, floods, starvation, crop failures, nuclear missiles, melting ice, it’s all there.
Australia the new America?” The Yahoo! News (8/23/08) headlined, “Police hunt for two-day-old baby to enforce hepatitis jab order*” To quote:
Australian police and welfare officials were Saturday searching for a couple who went into hiding with their two-day-old son to avoid having him forcibly vaccinated against hepatitis B, officials said.
Greenland Glacier Has Huge Crack#” from Time (8/22/08): To quote:
In northern Greenland, a part of the Arctic that had seemed immune
from global warming, new satellite images show a growing giant crack
and an 11-square-mile chunk of ice hemorrhaging off a major glacier,
scientists said Thursday.
